Founded in 1990 by Bishop Romulo Emiliani, the Foundation for the Children of Darien seeks to reduce child malnutrition in Darien, a region in eastern Panama that borders Colombia. This large region is sparsely populated, with its approximately 60,000 residents spread out over more than 16,000 square kilometers, or about 23,165 square miles. More than half the people live in poverty. The Foundation for the Children of Darien operates numerous programs throughout the region to improve children’s nutrition and health as well as to help develop communities in several ways, including organic farming. The foundation also sponsors early stimulation programs to give children the experiences and environment necessary to develop their physical, mental, and social senses. A more comprehensive presentation of the foundation’s various programs, projects, and activities is available on the group’s website at www.darien.org.
