The Republic of Panama, a nation of about 3.6 million people, sits on an isthmus in Central America which separates the Atlantic and Pacific oceans. The home of the Panama Canal, the nation relies on a heavily service-oriented economy. Much of the economy is based around the Canal itself, starting with revenues derived from operating the canal and including logistics, container ports, and flagship registry. Panama is currently expanding the locks on the Canal, an ambitious project that will permit dramatic economic growth. Begun in 2007, this project will essentially double the Canal’s capacity. The Canal, which has not been significantly upgraded since it opened to traffic in 1914, will ultimately be able to accommodate ships which are too large to transverse it at present. According to recent reports, the expanded Canal will open for ship traffic by the January 2016 deadline.
